About Dr. Paul Hommersen:

Paul is a registered clinical psychologist (C.Psych.) with more than 20 years of experience. He helps children, teens and adults through some of life's hardest times. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of British Columbia, and he has been registered with the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario since 2008.

Paul has worked in hospitals, schools, correctional settings and community agencies. He trained at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and in forensic services in Alberta. He has worked with youth and adults in conflict with the law, and with school boards to support students with big behaviour and learning needs. For close to ten years, he worked with women involved in the justice system, including survivors of trafficking. Many of them were coping with trauma, substance use, self-injury and overwhelming emotions.

Paul's style is warm, practical and based on research. He uses Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), including intensive training through Marsha Linehan's Behavioral Tech Institute. He also uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Prolonged Exposure, motivational interviewing and family systems approaches. He fits the approach to the person, not the person to the approach.

At Transformation Counselling, Paul offers psychological and psychoeducational assessments and therapy for children, teens, adults and families, all online. He is also a Professor at Sheridan College, where he coordinates the Addiction and Mental Health and the Autism and Behavioural Sciences graduate certificates. He teaches counselling, crisis management, suicide prevention and mental health, and he has published research on childhood behaviour and family life. He believes every client has a real desire to change, feel better and build a meaningful life.
