What Is the Psychiatry Collaboration Model?
Through Psychotherapy Matters Virtual Collaboration (PMVC), your therapist remains directly involved in your mental health care — even during the psychiatric assessment. This shared-care model brings together your therapist, family doctor or nurse practitioner, and a psychiatrist to create a streamlined, team-based approach to diagnosis and treatment planning.
Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Start with Your Therapist
Meet with one of our licensed therapists to explore your concerns. If a psychiatric assessment for ADHD, Autism, or another diagnosis is recommended, they’ll give you a referral form and walk you through the next steps.
Step 2: Get a Referral from Your Doctor
Take the referral form to your family doctor or nurse practitioner. They’ll complete the necessary paperwork which must be returned to your therapist.
Step 3: Attend a Collaborative Assessment
Once the referral is processed, you’ll have a virtual appointment with a psychiatrist and your therapist present at the same time. This ensures that your history, symptoms, and goals are clearly understood by everyone involved.
What’s Covered and What’s Not?
Psychiatrist fees are fully covered by OHIP.
This includes the psychiatric consultation and any follow-up recommendations for diagnosis or treatment planning.Your therapist’s time is not covered by OHIP.
You may use extended health insurance or pay privately for your therapy sessions, including the psychiatric assessment session where your therapist is present.
This collaborative process is ideal for clients looking for:
OHIP-covered ADHD assessments
OHIP-covered Autism assessments
Medication recommendations for depression, anxiety, or other mental health concerns
Psychiatrists in Kitchener-Waterloo or anywhere in Ontario without long wait times
Why Choose a Shared-Care Model?
Most psychiatry in Ontario involves long waitlists and brief, disconnected consultations. At Transformation Counselling, we do things differently.
Our therapists are active participants in your psychiatric assessment, ensuring that:
You feel supported before, during, and after the consultation
The psychiatrist receives a full clinical picture, not just a 15-minute summary
The treatment plan reflects your goals, not just a diagnosis
Communication between professionals is clear, timely, and focused on your care
What the Team Commits to You
Your Therapist:
Builds a strong working relationship with you before the referral
Stays present for the full psychiatric assessment
Provides history, context, and insight to the psychiatrist
Helps you understand next steps, including therapy or medication options
Continues working with you on your mental health goals
The Psychiatrist:
Offers expert assessment and treatment planning
Makes recommendations but does not take over your care
Coordinates with your therapist and doctor
Provides follow-up input when needed
Does not handle prescriptions directly (your doctor will)
Your Family Doctor or Nurse Practitioner:
Reviews the psychiatrist’s report
Prescribes any recommended medications
Orders relevant tests if needed
Maintains overall medical care outside the scope of psychiatry
