Windsor, Ontario has a view no other Canadian city can match: the Detroit skyline, right across the river, close enough to watch the lights come on at dusk. The city has built its best date spots along that riverfront, from an outdoor sculpture park to a public art gallery, and a few blocks inland the historic Capitol Theatre hosts the symphony and a big film festival. Head to the west end and the city gives way to rare tallgrass prairie and oak savanna. Here are date ideas across Windsor for late 2026, from a fall film festival to winter concerts and a park full of holiday lights.
Art Along the Detroit River
The Windsor Sculpture Park: An outdoor gallery of more than 31 large sculptures set along the Detroit River between the Ambassador Bridge and Festival Plaza, open every day of the year. Walk it slowly, argue about your favourite piece and keep one eye on the Detroit skyline across the water.
Art Windsor-Essex: The region's public art gallery sits on the riverfront and is open Thursday to Sunday, with a late night until 9 p.m. on Thursdays. A Thursday evening visit, then a riverside walk as the lights come up in Detroit, is about as easy a date as Windsor offers.
Riverfront trail: The city's riverfront path follows the water past the sculpture park and downtown. On a clear fall evening it is the best free date in town.
The Capitol, the Symphony and a Film Festival
Capitol Theatre: The historic theatre downtown is the home stage of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra and the hub of the city's film festival. The theatre says it is fully booked through to January 2027, so check its listings for what is on the week you want to go.
Windsor International Film Festival: WIFF takes over the Capitol from October 29 to November 8, 2026. Each pick a film from the lineup without telling the other, then compare notes over a late dinner.
Windsor Symphony Orchestra: The WSO's 2026 to 2027 season runs from country crossovers in October to Beethoven's third piano concerto on November 14 and 15 and The Music of James Bond on November 21 and 22. For the holidays, Holiday Pops plays the Capitol on December 19 and 20, and Handel's Messiah fills Our Lady of Assumption Church on December 3.
Holiday Lights in Jackson Park
Bright Lights Windsor: Jackson Park fills with light displays every holiday season, and the 2026 to 2027 edition opens on Friday, November 27, 2026. Bundle up, walk the paths with a hot drink and pick out your favourite display together. It is a classic Windsor tradition, and on a cold, clear night after the first snow it feels like the whole city has come out for a walk.
Prairie Trails at Ojibway
Ojibway Nature Centre: A free nature centre with a wall of windows onto the forest and a live exhibit of native snakes. From its parking lot you can walk into Ojibway Park and two neighbouring prairie areas, including a pond boardwalk.
Ojibway Prairie Complex: Six natural areas of tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, wetland and forest, all within a 10-minute drive of downtown. In late fall the prairie grasses turn copper and gold, and the trails are open from dawn to dusk.
History, Hockey and Old Walkerville
Museum Windsor: The city's museum runs two sites, the Chimczuk Museum and the historic François Baby House, with exhibits tracing Windsor's story from prehistoric times to today. Check current hours on the city's page before you go.
Windsor Spitfires: The city's OHL hockey team plays its 2026 to 2027 home games at the WFCU Centre. A weekend game is loud, affordable and a lot of fun even if neither of you follows hockey.
Walkerville: An older neighbourhood east of downtown with tree-lined streets and historic brick buildings, good for an unhurried walk and a meal. Go on a weekend afternoon, wander without a plan and stop wherever looks inviting.
Sample Date Itineraries
1. The riverfront evening: A Thursday visit to Art Windsor-Essex → a walk through The Windsor Sculpture Park → dinner downtown with a view of Detroit.
2. The festival night: An early dinner downtown → a WIFF screening at the Capitol Theatre → a late stroll on the riverfront trail.
3. The December date: Holiday Pops with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra → a drive to Jackson Park for Bright Lights Windsor.
Pro Tips for Memorable Dates
Art Windsor-Essex is open to walk-in visitors only from Thursday to Sunday. Monday to Wednesday is for pre-booked tours.
The WIFF 2026 lineup is already published. Pick your films early so you can plan dinner around the screening times.
Bright Lights Windsor opens on November 27, 2026, and parts of Jackson Park close in phases from mid-October for setup.
Ojibway's trails are open dawn to dusk. In November that means heading out by mid-afternoon.
The symphony's Messiah moves around the region from December 3 to 6. Only the December 3 (Our Lady of Assumption Church) and December 5 (St. Matthew's Anglican Church) performances are in Windsor.
Windsor is at its best when you face the river. Start with art on the water, end with music at the Capitol or lights in Jackson Park, and let the Detroit skyline be the backdrop to the whole day.
