Truro is a central Nova Scotia town with a 3,000 acre woodland park only minutes from its main streets. Late fall here brings quiet trails beside waterfalls, East Coast musicians on a downtown stage and a busy run of holiday events. The ideas below rely only on dates and details posted by Truro venues and organizers for the 2026 season.
Walks in Victoria Park
Victoria Park Trails: This natural woodland park covers 3,000 acres and begins just minutes from downtown at the main entrance on 29 Park Road. Its trail network winds through gorges and tall trees to look-offs and waterfalls. Make a loop that takes in Joe Howe Falls and Waddell Falls, then count the steps together as you climb Jacob's Ladder. Leave time to find the Holy and Wishing Wells, and each make a wish you keep secret until the drive home.
Town Park Maps: The Town calls the park one of its greatest assets, with trails for all ages, and its Victoria Park page links to facility and trail maps. Download one before you set out so you can plan a route that suits both of your legs.
When the Snow Arrives
Skiing and Snowshoeing: Once there is snow, Victoria Park grooms 25 trails totalling almost 20 kilometres for both classic and skate skiing. Snowshoers have plenty of room too, and the Railyard at the south end welcomes fat bikes, with rentals available from local shops. Best of all, the Town lends cross country skis and snowshoes free of charge through the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. If you hike instead, wear proper footwear and ice spikes, and stay off the groomed ski tracks. The park notes that winter trails are not maintained and are used at your own risk.
Christmas at the Marigold
A Gunning and Cormier Christmas: The Marigold Cultural Centre at 605 Prince Street is downtown Truro's home for live performance. On Thursday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m., Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier, two of Atlantic Canada's best loved performers, share an evening of music, stories and laughter.
Home For Christmas: On Tuesday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m., Heather Rankin, Rachel MacLean and Dale Miller gather for a show built around candlelight, story and song. It is an ideal weeknight escape from the cold, and a gentle way to ease into the holidays as a couple before the December rush.
Reeny's Family Christmas: Award winning songwriter and producer Reeny Smith brings her powerhouse voice to a holiday concert on Thursday, December 17 at 7:30 p.m. Sit side by side and let her set the mood for the last stretch before Christmas.
Downtown Holiday Events
Festival of Lights and Santa Claus Parade: Downtown Truro lights up Civic Square for its Festival of Lights on Friday, November 27 at 7 p.m., the kickoff of the holiday season. Two days later, on Sunday, November 29 at 4 p.m., the Downtown Truro Santa Claus Parade rolls through the core. Bundle up, find a curbside spot together and pick your favourite float.
Christmas at the RECC: The Rath Eastlink Community Centre hosts its big holiday market on Saturday, December 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 100 local vendors fill the atrium, both levels and the conference rooms, and admission is free. Give each other a small budget and a time limit, then swap your finds over lunch.
Colchester County Stories
Colchester Historeum: This museum and archives at 29 Young Street is devoted to the history of Colchester County. Its displays change often, so there is usually something new to see. It opens Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 4 p.m. Curious about family roots? Ask about the genealogy resources and see whose story you can trace first.
