Stratford Date Ideas: Creative and Fun Date Ideas for 2026

Stratford, Ontario is a small city on the Avon River with a very large theatre company at its heart. From spring to fall the Stratford Festival sets the rhythm of the place, and once its season winds down the town becomes quieter and, for a couple, arguably better: calmer streets, chocolate shops without the summer lineups, a cooking school serving dinner, and a winter light festival along the river after dark. Here are Stratford, Ontario date ideas for 2026, with date spots for the Festival's final weeks and date night plans for the long, lit-up winter that follows.

The Festival's Final Weeks of 2026

  • Stratford Festival: The 2026 season is in its last stretch. Most plays close by October 24, but the two musicals hold on longer: Guys and Dolls runs until November 14 and Something Rotten! until November 15, 2026. A matinee followed by an early dinner downtown is the classic Stratford date, and late in the season it is far easier to pull off.

Chocolate, Fudge and a Christmas Trail

  • Stratford Chocolate Trail: Destination Stratford sells a pass of six vouchers, each good for a chocolate treat at a different shop on its list, and the trail runs all year. It costs $39.55 including tax, and you can pick one up in person at the visitor office at 47 Downie Street. Split one pass and plan a route between stops, or buy two and compare notes.

  • Rhéo Thompson Candies: This long-running chocolatier at 55 Albert Street sells its own Mint Smoothies, boxed chocolates and fudge. It opens Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., so come by before the shops close and take a small box home.

  • Stratford Christmas Trail: From November 1 to December 20, the same idea turns into a holiday shopping trail, with six vouchers that you trade for a small holiday item at six participating businesses. The vouchers expire on December 20, so do it as an early-December afternoon rather than a last-minute errand.

Galleries and Local History

  • Gallery Stratford: The town's public gallery at 54 Romeo Street South shows changing exhibitions of contemporary Canadian art. From September to May it opens Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the third Thursday of each month admission is free from 5 to 8 p.m., which makes a good start to an evening out.

  • Stratford Perth Museum: Just west of town at 4275 Huron Road, the regional museum opens daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and runs winter extras such as snowshoeing on its grounds. It closes December 23 to 25 and on New Year's Day, so plan holiday visits around those dates.

Lights On Stratford After Dark

  • Lights On Stratford: The seventh winter light festival runs from December 18, 2026 to January 10, 2027 under the theme Canada: Northern Lights. Look for Forest Choir, a sound and light installation that takes over Tom Patterson Island, and As Water Falls, a digital waterfall making its Ontario debut. Free heated shuttle buses loop the main sites every 15 minutes, apart from a few days around Christmas and New Year's.

  • Lights ON: Lantern Tours: On December 18 and 22 and January 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Stratford Perth Museum hands out lanterns and leads small groups through some of the stranger objects in its collections room. Tickets are $10 plus tax and spaces are limited, so buy them as soon as you know your date.

Student Chefs and a River Walk

  • Stratford Chefs School: From late October to early March, the school's students cook and serve prix fixe dinners of four or more courses for the public, supervised by professional chefs. It is a chance to eat ambitious food while watching the next generation of Stratford cooks at work, and it makes a memorable winter dinner.

  • The Avon River: The river runs through the middle of town below the Festival Theatre, and a walk beside it is free in every season. Go just before dinner in late fall, when the summer visitors have gone and the water is still.

Sample Date Itineraries

1. The closing-weeks matinee: A walk along the Avon River → an afternoon performance at the Stratford Festival → chocolate from Rhéo Thompson Candies on the way out of town.

2. The winter dinner: An afternoon at the Stratford Perth Museum → a walk by the Avon River → a Student Chef dinner at the Stratford Chefs School.

3. The winter lights night: A Lantern Tour at the Stratford Perth Museum → the shuttle to Lights On Stratford installations along the river → hot drinks downtown.

Pro Tips for Memorable Dates

  • Stratford is about two hours by car from Toronto, so a Festival matinee works well as a day trip. Leave time for parking before curtain.

  • Rhéo Thompson closes at 3 p.m. on Sundays, and many trail stops keep shorter hours in winter, so check each business before you set your route.

  • The free Lights On shuttles do not run on December 24, 25 and 26 or on January 1 and 2. Plan to walk or drive between sites on those nights.

  • Lantern Tour spots are limited and the dates are fixed, which makes them the one part of a winter visit worth locking in early.

Without the summer crowds, Stratford feels more like what it is: a handsome little river town with an unusual appetite for art, food and theatre. Come for one last show of the season as a Stratford date night, then come back in the dark of winter when the riverbanks are glowing.
