Nelson rewards couples who like culture with their snow. A heritage theatre on Victoria Street, a museum and gallery with free Thursday evenings, a Cold War bunker you can actually tour and a powder ski hill a short drive away all fit into one winter. The ideas below draw only on what Nelson venues have posted for November 2026 through early 2027.
An Evening at the Capitol
Not Just Another Date Night: The Capitol Theatre at 421 Victoria Street has a show built for this exact occasion on Saturday, November 28. Not Just Another Date Night is part of the Capitol Season, so grab seats together and confirm the start time on the theatre's ticket page before booking dinner.
King Arthur: The Capitol's winter production of King Arthur runs from Thursday, December 3 to Sunday, December 6. Pick a performance and make it the start of your holiday season.
Wicked Sing-Along: On Friday, December 18, Capitol Films screens a Wicked Sing-Along. Practise the big numbers in the car and belt them out together.
January at the Capitol: The new year brings The Audience on film on January 12, 2027, then Luminarium on January 25 and Souvenir on January 30, both part of the Capitol Season. Taking turns choosing the show keeps things fair.
February Laughs: If you both need a laugh in the depths of winter, the Snowed In Comedy Tour stops at the Capitol on February 2, 2027, and comedian Brent Butt follows on February 17. A shared laugh is a fine cure for cabin fever, and either night pairs well with an early dinner nearby.
Museum Nights and a Hidden Bunker
Free Thursday Evenings at NMAG: The Nelson Museum, Archives and Gallery at 502 Vernon Street opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Thursdays it stays open late with free admission from 4 to 8 p.m. Explore the second floor history exhibit with its interactive modules, then browse the shop, which carries work from more than 120 local artists and artisans.
Winter Exhibitions: The Settler Problem, a series of oil paintings by Dylan Humphreys, opens November 6 and runs to February 13, 2027. From November 21 to February 27, Ian Johnston's two immersive four channel video installations, The Life and Times of G and Fine Line: Check Check, fill another gallery. Compare notes over a hot drink afterward.
Cold War Bunker Tour: Nelson was home to one of the 50 Cold War bunkers built across Canada in the 1950s and 60s, and it remained unknown for years. On Saturdays you can take a guided tour at noon, 1, 2 or 3 p.m., or register ahead for the 11 a.m. tour. It makes for an unusual Saturday plan that you will both be talking about later.
Ski Films and Powder Days
The Way Out: Matchstick Productions brings its 34th annual ski film to the Capitol on Friday, December 11, hosted by the Whitewater Ski Team. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the film starts at 7, which is plenty of time to pick out the lines you want to try this season.
Whitewater Mountain Resort: Whitewater sits about a 20 minute drive from Nelson, and this winter it is bringing Short Side inbounds, adding more than 190 acres and six new runs. The opening date had not been posted when we checked, so watch the resort's site and plan a powder day once the lifts start turning.
Skating at the Community Complex
Nelson and District Community Complex: The complex run by the regional district has an ice arena alongside its aquatic centre and fitness centre, and public skating is one of its drop in programs. Check the current schedule, lace up, and hold hands for a few laps, then see whether the hot tub is open for a warm soak afterward.
Baker Street and the Lakeshore
A Downtown Stroll: Before or after the museum, wander the heritage storefronts along Baker Street, then walk toward the water for a view of the Big Orange Bridge over the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. It is free, unhurried and a good way to end any of the plans on this list.
Sample Date Itineraries
1. Free Thursday: Baker Street stroll → NMAG late opening from 4 p.m. → dinner downtown
2. Saturday Secrets: Cold War Bunker tour → winter exhibitions → Not Just Another Date Night on November 28
3. Ski Season Warm Up: Skate at the community complex → The Way Out at the Capitol on December 11
Pro Tips for Memorable Dates
The Saturday 11 a.m. bunker tour needs registration ahead of time, while later tours are drop in.
Capitol box office hours are Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the number is 250-352-6363.
The museum is closed Sundays and Mondays, so plan gallery dates for later in the week.
Recreation schedules change by season, so confirm skate times with the regional district first.
Keep a flexible weekend open in December for the first good snow at Whitewater.
Theatre seats, gallery walls and fresh snow give Nelson couples a winter with something new each week.
