Barrie wraps around the end of Kempenfelt Bay, the long western arm of Lake Simcoe, and its downtown runs straight down the hill to the water. That makes it an easy city for dates on foot: a gallery in an old library, a city-run theatre on Dunlop Street, a Saturday market at City Hall and a waterfront trail lined with public art. In winter, the ski hills and Nordic trails just north of the city turn it into a snow town. Here are date ideas across Barrie for late 2026 and the winter ahead, from fall gallery afternoons to a skate downtown and a day on the slopes.
Kempenfelt Bay and the Spirit Catcher
Barrie waterfront: The city's lakefront parks and paths run along Kempenfelt Bay from Johnson's Beach to Tyndale Park. Follow the Waterfront Heritage Trail, whose 11 interpretive stations tell Barrie's story from the last ice age to today, and look out for the Sea Serpent sculpture along the way.
The Spirit Catcher: Ron Baird's 21-metre steel sculpture was made for Expo 86 in Vancouver and has stood at the foot of Maple Street since 1987. Its 16 quills move in the wind off the bay, so come on a breezy evening and watch it shift as the light fades. Then walk east along the bay as the lights come on across the water.
Art and Theatre Downtown
MacLaren Art Centre: Barrie's public gallery fills a 1917 Carnegie library and a modern addition on Mulcaster Street, with a sculpture courtyard and a café. Admission is by donation, and it stays open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays for an after-work visit.
Five Points Theatre: The city-run theatre at 1 Dunlop Street West hosts touring music, dance and theatre through the year. Check the city's theatre listings for what is on, then make a night of it with dinner nearby.
Downtown Barrie: Dunlop Street and the blocks around it run from the theatre down to the waterfront, lined with restaurants, pubs and cafés. It is the easy place to start or finish any downtown date.
Saturday Market and Winter Rinks
Barrie Farmers' Market: The market sets up at City Hall on Collier Street every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., all year round, and is celebrating 180 years. Go hungry, share whatever looks best and pick up something to cook together that night. It runs right through the winter, so it works as a start to a cold Saturday too.
Circle at the Centre and Will Dwyer Park rinks: Once winter arrives, the city runs two outdoor refrigerated rinks, and both open at 10 a.m. daily, weekends included. On a cold snap there is also a natural rink on the pond in Heritage Park by the bay.
Game Night with the Colts
Barrie Colts: The city's OHL team plays its 2026 to 2027 home games at Sadlon Arena. Junior hockey is fast and loud, the crowd is close to the ice, and it is a fun winter night out even for a couple who do not watch the sport.
Ski Hills and Snow Trails Just North of the City
Snow Valley: A ski hill just outside Barrie, close enough for an afternoon on the slopes followed by dinner back in town. Opening day depends on snow, so watch its snow report as winter comes in.
Horseshoe Valley Resort: About 20 minutes north of Barrie in Oro-Medonte, with 28 alpine runs, 30 km of groomed Nordic trails and snow tubing. If one of you skis and one does not, the tubing hill is an easy way to share the day.
Hardwood Ski and Bike: A trail centre in the Oro-Medonte hills with cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. A quiet ski through the woods, then hot drinks by the car, is a very Barrie kind of date.
Sample Date Itineraries
1. The Saturday downtown: Breakfast at the Barrie Farmers' Market → an afternoon at the MacLaren Art Centre → a sunset walk to the Spirit Catcher.
2. The Thursday night out: The MacLaren's late opening → dinner on Dunlop Street → a show at Five Points Theatre.
3. The snow day: A morning of cross-country skiing at Hardwood Ski and Bike → lunch back in town → an evening skate at Circle at the Centre.
Pro Tips for Memorable Dates
The MacLaren closes on Mondays and at 4 p.m. most days. Thursday is the only late night, until 8 p.m.
The farmers' market is a morning event, done by 1 p.m. Arrive early for the best choice.
Ski areas set opening days by snowfall, and none has announced a 2026 to 2027 date yet. Check each resort's site before you drive up.
The Heritage Park pond rink is natural ice and only opens in a real cold spell. The two refrigerated rinks are the safer bet.
The waterfront, the gallery, the theatre and Dunlop Street are all within a short walk of each other downtown.
Barrie works best when you use both halves of it: the lake and downtown for slow afternoons and evenings out, and the snowy hills to the north once winter really sets in. Choose a season, pick a spot on the bay and enjoy it together.
