St. John's, Newfoundland is the oldest city in North America, and it wears its age with bright paint, steep lanes and a harbour framed by rock. Winter here is windy and full of character, from mummers in disguise to a downtown parade that collects food for neighbours. These St. John's date ideas take you from the hilltop above the Narrows down to the lakeside trails and the city's best warm rooms.
Above the Narrows on Signal Hill
Signal Hill National Historic Site: The grounds are open all year, and the walk up rewards you with a sweeping view over the harbour, the Narrows and the open Atlantic. The visitor centre closed for the season on October 9, so treat this as an outdoor date. Dress for wind, hold hands on the climb and watch the city lights come on below as the afternoon fades.
Province Stories at The Rooms
The Rooms: The provincial museum, gallery and archives building at 9 Bonaventure Avenue stays open until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, which makes it an easy evening plan. Wander the galleries, compare favourite pieces, then stand at the big windows looking over downtown. It is closed on Mondays, over Christmas from December 24 to 26, and again on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Metrobus routes 2, 10 and 15 stop nearby if you would rather leave the car at home.
Johnson Geo Centre: Built right into the rock of Signal Hill, this earth science centre is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. until December 20, with extra days on December 21 and 22. It closes to the public from January to March, so make it a fall or early December outing.
Mummers, Ugly Sticks and a Downtown Parade
Mummers Festival: From November 20 to December 12, 2026, the festival celebrates the old Newfoundland custom of mummering, when neighbours dress in disguise and drop in on one another. It opens with a Kitchen Party on November 20. Try a workshop together such as the Ugly Stick session on December 3 or a lantern night, and go home with something you made side by side. The season ends with the Mummers Parade in Bowring Park on Saturday, December 12, where costumed figures fill the paths.
Downtown St. John's Christmas Parade: The parade rolls through downtown on Sunday, November 29, 2026 at noon, with December 6 set aside if the weather forces a delay. Bring a non-perishable food item or a donation for the Community Food Sharing Association, find a spot on the curb and share a thermos while the floats go by.
Lakeside Loops and Duck Pond Lights
Quidi Vidi Lake: The trail around the lake is one the City grooms in winter, so it stays walkable when other paths are buried. Loop the water at an easy pace, then continue to the old fishing village of Quidi Vidi, where the tiny harbour feels a world away from downtown. Keep an eye out for waterfowl on the water, and pause on the shore to take in the hills rising behind the harbour.
Bowring Park Holiday Lights: Each holiday season the City strings lights through Bowring Park, around the Duck Pond and along the paths. The City has not posted its 2026 dates yet, so check its page before you go. Come on a calm evening, walk the glowing loop slowly and warm your hands on a hot drink.
A Holiday Ballet With a Live Orchestra
The Nutcracker at the Arts and Culture Centre: Kittiwake Dance Theatre presents its 40th annual Nutcracker from December 10 to 13, 2026 at the John C. Perlin Arts and Culture Centre, 95 Allandale Road. A live orchestra plays the score, which turns a familiar story into a proper night out. Dress up a little and talk over your favourite scenes on the drive home.
Sample Date Itineraries
1. Rock and harbour: The Johnson Geo Centre in the morning → the climb onto the Signal Hill grounds → a lookout stop above the Narrows before sunset.
2. Late night at the museum: A Wednesday or Friday evening at The Rooms → a walk down the steep streets toward the colourful row houses → a warm drink downtown.
3. Mummering weekend: A Mummers Festival workshop on a weeknight → the Mummers Parade in Bowring Park on December 12 → a slow loop of Quidi Vidi Lake the next morning.
Pro Tips for Memorable Dates
Signal Hill is very exposed, so bring a hat, gloves and a windproof layer even on a mild day.
The Rooms closes on Mondays, while the Geo Centre is open only Wednesday to Sunday, so plan museum days midweek or on weekends.
Look over the Mummers Festival workshop list early, since sessions such as ribbon fool, printmaking and the Mummers Memory Mug Up run on different nights.
Bring a food item to the Christmas Parade and keep December 6 in mind as the backup date.
Parking at The Rooms is $3 an hour, and the Metrobus is a simple alternative.
St. John's has a way of turning bad weather into good stories. Bundle up, say yes to something a little odd and let the city surprise you both.
