Spruce Grove, Alberta is a growing city just west of the capital region, with a restored grain elevator by the tracks, a forested park in its middle and a performing arts centre that saves some of its best shows for December. This season couples can watch Central Park light up, browse a downtown Christmas market, guess the identity of a mystery holiday headliner and lace up for a Friday afternoon skate. Each idea below was checked on the official page of the city or the organization involved in late October 2026.
Holiday Nights at Horizon Stage
Mystery Artist: Christmas Edition: Horizon Stage has a festive concert on December 6 at 7:30 p.m. with a headliner it refuses to name until November 23. Clues go out on the venue's social channels, and fans can email a guess for a chance to win. Make a private bet with each other before the reveal, and let the loser plan dinner.
God is a Scottish Drag Queen Christmas Special: On December 12 at 7:30 p.m., Mike Delamont's beloved comic character returns in a brand new holiday power suit to set the record straight on Yuletide. The series has filled theatres across North America for over a decade. Expect irreverent jokes and a lot of laughing, which is a fine way to shake off December stress together.
The 11 O'Clock Number: Christmas Special: Grindstone Theatre takes over the intimate Black Box Theatre on December 13 at 7 p.m. for an improvised holiday musical built entirely from audience suggestions. A live pianist backs the cast as they invent characters, songs and dance moves on the spot. Have a ridiculous suggestion ready, just in case.
Lights and Local Shopping
Light Up: The City's annual Light Up turns Central Park into a sparkling display on Saturday, November 28, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Because the sun sets early by late November, the second half of the event is the best time to see the lights at full glow. More details are promised closer to the date, so check the City page that week.
City Centre Christmas Market: The day after Light Up, the City Centre hosts its Christmas Market on Sunday, November 29 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local vendors fill the downtown with holiday shopping and festive fun. Set a small gift budget, go separate ways for half an hour, and then swap your finds.
Gallery Afternoons
Spruce Grove Art Gallery: The Allied Arts Council runs this gallery, which shows work by its members and other Alberta artists. It now operates from Heavy Metal Place at 50 Westwind Drive, open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed Sundays and holidays. Check the exhibition calendar for what is on the walls when you visit, then choose a favourite piece each.
Grain Elevator Stories
Spruce Grove Grain Elevator: Built in 1958 and working until 1995, the grain elevator at 120 Railway Avenue was saved from demolition and is now kept by the Spruce Grove and District Agricultural Heritage Society. Winter office hours run on Mondays and Wednesdays from November to April, and tours can be arranged by calling the Society. Ask about the red barn on the same site while you are there.
Woods and Ice
Heritage Grove Park: This forested park runs through the city, and its trails are marked with wayfinding posts and boards about local ecology. Owls, chickadees, pileated woodpeckers and flying squirrels live here, so walk slowly and listen. Pull up the City's online trail map before you go and pick a loop you have never tried.
Public skating at the Tri Leisure Centre: The TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre offers public skating on Fridays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. through December. Every skater, adults included, must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet, and rentals are available at the front desk. Leave work a little early, skate a few laps, then roll into the weekend together.
Sample Date Itineraries
1. Light Up weekend (November 28 and 29): Light Up in Central Park on Saturday afternoon → the City Centre Christmas Market on Sunday morning.
2. Skate and laugh (Friday, December 11 into Saturday, December 12): Friday skate at the Tri Leisure Centre → a Saturday walk in Heritage Grove Park → God is a Scottish Drag Queen at 7:30 p.m.
3. Sunday double (December 13): Heritage Grove Park in daylight → The 11 O'Clock Number in the Black Box Theatre at 7 p.m.
