North Battleford looks out over the North Saskatchewan River valley, and its winter calendar is anchored by a performing arts centre, two city galleries and a provincial museum. Add groomed ski trails and outdoor rinks once the cold settles in, and couples have plenty to share without leaving town. All of the suggestions below come from information that North Battleford venues and the city have published.
Holiday Concerts at the Dekker Centre
Ménestrel: On Tuesday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m., Ménestrel brings early music and folk traditions to the Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, with luminous voices, period instruments and fresh arrangements. Founded by Janelle Lucyk and Kerry Bursey, the ensemble sets out to make old songs feel close and personal, which suits a quiet night for two. The group has performed across Canada since 2019 and aims to bring early music out of formal concert halls and back to everyday listeners, so no expertise is needed to enjoy it.
Brett Kissel Holiday Tour: Country star Brett Kissel plays the Dekker on Wednesday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m. His holiday tour promises an up close, unplugged evening of hits, stories and Christmas tunes you already know, so sing along quietly and enjoy it together.
Leahy: Celtic Roots and Christmas Cheer: On Wednesday, December 9 at 7:30 p.m., Leahy mixes original songs with traditional Canadian, Irish, Scottish and French-Canadian tunes, plus spirited step dancing and classic carols. It is a lively way to start the holidays side by side.
Gallery Afternoons
Allen Sapp Gallery: The Allen Sapp Gallery, home to the Gonor Collection at 1 Railway Avenue, celebrates the legacy and powerful art of the Northern Plains Cree painter. From October through May it opens Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., and admission is by donation. Take your time with the paintings and share which scene stays with each of you. Staff can also tell you about tours if you would like a guided look at the collection on a later visit.
The Chapel Gallery: At the south end of the Don Ross Centre, 891 99th Street, the Chapel Gallery keeps the same winter hours, Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, with donations welcome. Pair it with the Allen Sapp Gallery for an easy two gallery afternoon.
Prairie History at the WDM
Western Development Museum: The Western Development Museum opens daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through December. Inside, you can marvel at massive steam engines, gleaming 1920s vehicles and displays on Saskatchewan's natural resources. The outdoor heritage village is a summer feature, so plan this as an indoor date. Note that it closes on Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, and shuts at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
Ski Trails in the River Valley
City Cross Country Ski Trails: Once winter arrives, the city grooms cross country trails in four areas. Centennial Park, behind the Access Communications Centre, has several kilometres of groomed track with enough light for evening skiing. For a quieter outing, Finlayson Island's looped trails wind through sheltering woods, and the North Shore Trail is a 5.5 km wooded loop along the North Saskatchewan River. Check the city's trail conditions before you go.
River Valley Walk: Before the snow is deep enough to ski, walk the North Shore Trail from its start at the observation tower beside the Battlefords Goose Project. The path follows the northern shore of the North Saskatchewan River, and along the way you can see where the North Saskatchewan and Battle Rivers meet. With no motorized vehicles allowed, it stays peaceful, and it makes a fine spot for a long talk on a bright November afternoon.
Skating Under the Lights
Outdoor Rinks: North Battleford floods six outdoor rinks each winter, weather permitting. Three are lit for nighttime skating, including the Senator Jenny Spyglass Outdoor Arena next to the Access Communications Centre. Bring a thermos, skate a few slow laps under the lights, then try the Don Ross toboggan hill beside the arena, which is lit by the North Battleford Lions Club.
Sample Date Itineraries
1. Art and Carols (Dec 9): Allen Sapp Gallery → Chapel Gallery → Leahy at the Dekker Centre
2. History and Hits (Dec 2): Western Development Museum in the afternoon → Brett Kissel at 7:30 p.m.
3. Winter Weekend: Ski the North Shore Trail → warm up at home → night skate at a lit outdoor rink
Pro Tips for Memorable Dates
Both city galleries are closed Mondays and Tuesdays in winter and on statutory holidays.
Dekker shows can sell out, as one November concert already has.
Check the city's rink and trail condition pages, since openings depend on the weather.
Walkers should stay off groomed ski tracks, and dogs are not allowed on the ski trails.
Plan WDM visits around its holiday closures in November and December.
Admission at both city galleries is by donation, so bring a little cash to support local art.
Live music, prairie art and a river valley under snow give North Battleford couples a warm winter to look forward to.
