Leamington, Ontario lies along Lake Erie's north shore, right next to the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland. That location gives couples a national park built for long walks and starry nights, a marsh full of migrating birds and a lakefront park with a brand-new plaza. Downtown, a small arts centre keeps its galleries full year round. Here are Leamington date ideas for late 2026.
Standing at Canada's southern edge
Point Pelee National Park: Canada's second-smallest national park ends at the southernmost tip of the Canadian mainland, a narrow point of sand reaching into Lake Erie. Through April 15, 2027, the park is open from 7 a.m. to dusk, with more than 12 km of trails to explore. The free shuttle to the Tip and the Visitor Centre both close for the season after November 1, so check the park page for current access before you go. Swimming or wading at the Tip is never allowed because of dangerous currents.
Stargazing in a Dark Sky Preserve
Dark Sky Nights at Point Pelee: Point Pelee has been a Dark Sky Preserve since 2006, and on select new-moon nights the park stays open until midnight for stargazing. The next one is Saturday, December 12, 2026. Pack blankets, a thermos and binoculars, and let your eyes adjust until the sky fills with stars.
Birds and big skies at Hillman Marsh
Hillman Marsh Conservation Area: Right beside Lake Erie, Hillman Marsh offers walking trails, viewing towers and a birding trail along 87 acres of managed shorebird habitat. Herons, egrets and ducks are regulars, and a pair of bald eagles nests here. Note that the marsh's west cell is closed to all visitors while crews fight an invasive plant, so follow the trails from the main entrance. Trails are open in daylight only.
Gallery hour at the Leamington Arts Centre
Leamington Arts Centre: Downtown Leamington's arts centre welcomes visitors 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and a dual admission for two is just $5. Its current exhibition, Let Them Hear You: The Artists of Colour, runs until December 3, 2026. Afterwards, compare notes on your favourite pieces over a coffee nearby.
Lake Erie views from Seacliff Park
Seacliff Park: The town's lakefront park overlooks Lake Erie, with a public beach and grassy slopes above the water. In the off-season it's a quiet spot for a walk, and on a clear day the open view across the lake is reason enough to linger.
Waterfront Market Plaza: Leamington's newly completed waterfront plaza adds public seating, green space and a new stage by the lake, part of the redevelopment of the town's shoreline. Grab a bench and watch the water together.
Sample Date Itineraries
1. Southern point and starlight: A late-afternoon trail walk at Point Pelee → dinner in town → back to the park for Dark Sky Night on December 12.
2. Birds and art: A morning at the Hillman Marsh viewing towers → the Leamington Arts Centre after lunch.
3. A lakefront evening: A stroll through Seacliff Park → an evening on a bench at the Waterfront Market Plaza.
Pro Tips for Memorable Dates
Point Pelee's park hours run 7 a.m. to dusk all winter, so start early on short November days.
Seacliff Drive East construction has affected access to Point Pelee; check the Municipality's updates before you drive.
For Dark Sky Night, dress for a cold Lake Erie wind and bring a red flashlight to protect your night vision.
Hillman Marsh trails close at dusk, and the west cell is off-limits.
The arts centre is closed Sundays and Mondays.
Leamington's corner of Lake Erie is made for slow dates: a walk to the edge of the country, a marsh full of birds and a night under real stars. Pick one and enjoy the south shore together.
