Kitsilano sits on the west side of Vancouver, where English Bay meets a neighbourhood of tree-lined streets, heritage homes and beach paths with views of the North Shore mountains. In late fall and winter, the summer crowds fade and Kits becomes a place for museum evenings in Vanier Park, misty seawall walks, Sunday markets and skating at the community rink. These date ideas for November and December are built around Kitsilano places and events with official details posted for the season.
Evenings at the Museum of Vancouver
Museum of Vancouver: The Museum of Vancouver at 1100 Chestnut Street in Vanier Park stays open until 8 p.m. from Thursday to Saturday, which makes it an easy weeknight date. On other days it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wander the galleries, then each pick the object that best captures the city for you.
Taking Care: Disability Activism and Possible Futures: Opening November 19, this new exhibition traces the artists, designers, filmmakers and performers who have shaped Vancouver's disability activism in the arts since the 1970s, then invites visitors to imagine the city's future. Talk about which idea for the future you would most like to see come true.
Stars and Ships in Vanier Park
H.R. MacMillan Space Centre: Sharing the building with the museum, the Space Centre is open daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A visit includes a 45 minute show in the Planetarium Star Theatre and a live science demonstration, plus an augmented reality experience on weekends. Lean back under the dome and pick out a constellation to call your own.
Vancouver Maritime Museum and the St. Roch: A short walk west through Vanier Park, the Maritime Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with shorter hours on Christmas Eve and closures on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Its centrepiece is the St. Roch, the first vessel to cross the Northwest Passage from west to east, which is open for self-guided tours from 10:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum has announced a project to revitalize the St. Roch exhibit, so check the page before you go. Walk the decks and imagine a winter in the Arctic together.
Kits Beach and the Seawall
Kitsilano Beach: Kits Beach sits on Cornwall Avenue at the north end of Yew Street, right on the Seaside Seawall. In winter the sand is quiet, which makes it a lovely place for a slow walk with a warm drink in hand. Follow the seawall toward Vanier Park, stop to look across the water and stay until the city lights come on.
Skating at Kitsilano Rink
Kitsilano Rink: At the Kitsilano War Memorial Community Centre on Larch Street, near West Broadway and Macdonald Street, the ice is in from September to March. Skate rentals are available during public skate times, and free helmets are on hand. Check the City's public skate schedule, then take a few laps together and see who falls first.
Markets and Makers
Kitsilano Winter Farmers Market: Every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting November 8, more than 50 farms and producers set up at West 10th Avenue and Trafalgar Street, beside Kitsilano Secondary School, along with food and coffee trucks. The market skips December 27 and January 3. Shop together for the ingredients of a dinner you will cook that night.
Kits House Holiday Market: On Saturday, November 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kitsilano Neighbourhood House on West 7th Avenue fills its Community Hall with handmade crafts and artwork from local makers. Warm up with a hot drink and find a small gift for each other.
Sample Date Itineraries
Thursday museum night: Walk the seawall from Kits Beach to Vanier Park at dusk, then explore the Museum of Vancouver before it closes at 8 p.m.
Sunday in Kits: Shop the winter farmers market in the morning, cook lunch together, then take an afternoon stroll on Kits Beach.
Vanier Park day: Catch a planetarium show at the Space Centre, then walk to the Maritime Museum and step aboard the St. Roch.
