Commercial Drive runs through the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood of East Vancouver, a long, lively street of small shops, cafes, murals and community theatres that locals simply call The Drive. In late fall and winter the rain sets in, and The Drive answers with a homegrown holiday panto, circus and harp shows, open artist studios, maker markets and a tree lighting in the park. These date ideas for November and December are built around Commercial Drive places and events with official details posted for the season.
East Van Panto at the York Theatre
East Van Panto: Hercules: From November 18 to January 10, Theatre Replacement and The Cultch stage their yearly East Van Panto at the York Theatre, 639 Commercial Drive. This year Hades wants to take over the city and turn Science World into a shrine to himself, and only a very distracted Hercules can stop him. Evening shows start at 7 p.m. and matinees at 2 p.m. Panto means cheering the hero and booing the villain, so come ready to be loud together. Opening night is Friday, November 20, and there are matinees on many weekends, including November 22, 28 and 29. The theatre offers wheelchair seating on the main floor and an elevator to the balcony. If you have questions, The Cultch box office answers the phone from noon to 4 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
Circus and Harps at The Cultch
Circurious Cabaret 6: On November 26 and 27 at 7 p.m., the Historic Theatre at 1895 Venables Street, just off The Drive, hosts a night of local circus. Expect aerial acts, acrobatics and performers who mix stunts with storytelling. Afterward, each of you names the trick you would most like to learn.
Winter Harp: On December 4, at 3 p.m. or 7:30 p.m., Winter Harp fills the same theatre with harps, flutes, old instruments, poetry and carols on a candlelit stage. It is a calm, cosy show for a rainy night. The theatre has wheelchair access, but there is no elevator to the balcony.
Eastside Culture Crawl
Eastside Culture Crawl: From November 19 to 22, more than 500 East Vancouver artists open their studios for the 30th Eastside Culture Crawl. The festival covers the area between Columbia Street, First Avenue, Victoria Drive and the waterfront, which takes in the north end of The Drive. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekend. Pick a few studios on the online map, then let yourselves get happily lost between them. Ask each artist one question about how they work. Some festival programs, like talks and videos, are also offered online, so check the events page if the weather turns. Wear shoes for walking, since studios can be a few blocks apart.
Got Craft Holiday Market
Got Craft at the Croatian Cultural Centre: The Got Craft Holiday Market fills the Croatian Cultural Centre at 3250 Commercial Drive over two weekends, November 21 and 22 and November 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. About 100 makers and small shops bring clothing, jewellery, homewares, paper goods and art, and the organizers say half the vendors are new on the second weekend. Try the free do-it-yourself station together, then set a small budget and secretly buy each other one gift. The market also has food trucks and a Mini Makers Area where kid entrepreneurs aged 16 and under sell their own work, which makes for a fun stop on the way out.
Second Weekend Tickets: The second weekend has its own page and tickets, so check which weekend you are buying for before you go.
Christmas on the Drive in Grandview Park
Christmas Wonderland on The Drive: On Sunday, November 29, from 2 to 5 p.m., the Commercial Drive Business Society turns Grandview Park into a holiday wonderland. The official page lists live music, free photos with Santa, horse-drawn carriage rides along The Drive and complimentary treats. Stay for the Christmas tree lighting at 5 p.m., then wander the street to see the shop windows glow.
Sample Date Itineraries
Panto night: Stroll The Drive in the early evening, then laugh, cheer and boo your way through East Van Panto at the York Theatre.
Art crawl evening: Spend a Thursday or Friday night of the Culture Crawl visiting studios near the north end of The Drive, then walk south for a late snack.
November 29 double: Shop the last Got Craft weekend in the morning, then head north to Grandview Park for the 5 p.m. tree lighting.
