You might be juggling a career, a relationship, kids, aging parents or all of the above. You might be the person everyone else leans on, quietly running low. Or you might be in a season of change, a new baby, a breakup, midlife, and not feeling like yourself. If you're looking for women's therapy, Ottawa is one of four cities where we offer it in person, along with online sessions across Ontario. With us, it's individual counselling shaped around your life and the stage you're in. This guide covers common reasons women reach out, what sessions look like, how to choose a therapist and how to get started downtown or online.
This post is general information, not a diagnosis, medical advice or a treatment plan.
Women's therapy in Ottawa, what it is
Women's therapy isn't a separate kind of treatment. It's individual therapy that takes the realities of your life seriously, including the roles you carry, the expectations placed on you and the transitions that come with different life stages.
You don't need to be in crisis to come. Many women start therapy because they want space to think, feel and figure out what they need, without having to look after anyone else for an hour.
Common reasons women reach out
There's no wrong reason to start. Some of the most common include:
Stress and overwhelm. Too many demands and not enough time or rest.
Anxiety. Worry that won't switch off, racing thoughts or panic.
Low mood. Feeling flat, tearful or disconnected for weeks.
Relationships. Conflict, distance, breakups or questions about what you want.
Burnout. Feeling exhausted and empty from work, caregiving or both.
Body image and self-worth. A harsh inner voice about how you look or who you are.
Big life changes. Moves, career shifts, loss or becoming a parent.
If you're not sure what to call what you're feeling, that's okay. A therapist can help you sort it out.
Pregnancy, new parenthood and fertility
The road to parenthood can bring joy and also a lot of strain. Trying to conceive, pregnancy loss, a hard pregnancy or the early months with a baby can stir up anxiety, grief and exhaustion. Mood changes after having a baby can happen to anyone, and they deserve support.
Our post on therapy after a baby in Ottawa explains how counselling can help after a baby arrives. If you're facing infertility or loss, our post on infertility and pregnancy loss counselling in Ottawa describes that support.
Midlife and perimenopause
Midlife can bring a mix of changes at once: shifting roles at home, career questions, aging parents and changes in your body. Some women notice mood changes, irritability, poor sleep or a sense of not recognizing themselves during perimenopause.
If you're looking for perimenopause therapy, Ottawa sessions with us focus on the emotional side: coping with mood changes, stress and sleep worries, grief over what's changing and questions of identity and purpose. Counselling doesn't replace medical care, and we don't give medical or hormone advice. What therapy can offer is a place to talk it through and find ways to cope, alongside whatever other care you choose.
Caregiving, work and burnout
Many women carry a large share of caregiving, for children, partners, parents or all three, on top of paid work. Over time, that load can lead to burnout: feeling exhausted, detached and like nothing you do is enough.
Therapy can help you notice the signs earlier, set limits without guilt, ask for help and make room for rest. It can also help with the guilt that often shows up when you finally put yourself on the list.
What sessions look like
Sessions usually start with a conversation about what's going on and what you'd like to change. From there, you and your therapist set goals together.
Our therapists draw on approaches such as:
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Noticing unhelpful thought patterns and trying new ways of responding.
Emotion-focused therapy (EFT). Understanding and working with your emotions, rather than pushing them away.
Internal Family Systems (IFS). Getting to know different parts of yourself, like the inner critic or the part that keeps everyone happy.
The approach matters, but so does the relationship. Feeling safe and understood is a big part of what makes therapy work.
Choosing a therapist
When you book, you're welcome to share any preferences, such as a therapist's approach, experience or gender, and our admin team will do their best to suggest a good fit. You can also ask questions during your free consultation before deciding.
It's okay if the first match isn't the right one. You can always ask to try someone else, and you don't need to explain why.
Support for every stage
Women's counselling, Ottawa or online, isn't only for one season of life. People reach out in their twenties while starting careers and relationships, in their thirties and forties while raising families or changing direction, and later in life while facing retirement, loss or caring for others. Whatever stage you're in, counselling for women, Ottawa Ontario residents included, can meet you where you are.
Making time for yourself
One of the hardest parts of starting therapy can be finding the time. If your days are packed, it may help to think of sessions as part of how you keep going, not something extra. Online sessions from home or a quiet room at work can save travel time. Some women book at the same time each week so it becomes a routine, like any other appointment. And if you need to start slowly, that's fine. Even a few sessions can give you space to breathe and plan.
Questions people often ask
Do I need a referral? No, you can book directly.
What if I don't know what to talk about? That's common. Your therapist will help you find a starting point.
Can I come for just a few sessions? Yes. You decide how long you stay, and you can check in about it at any time.
When it's more than a rough patch
Sometimes low mood, anxiety or exhaustion goes on for weeks and starts to affect sleep, work or relationships. That's a good time to reach out. You don't need to wait until things feel unbearable.
If you're having thoughts of not wanting to be here, please don't wait. Call or text 9-8-8 any time, or call 911 if you're in immediate danger.
Downtown Ottawa or online
Our Ottawa office is at 1 Rideau Street, 7th Floor, Ottawa, ON K1N 8S7, inside the Fairmont Château Laurier. You can reach it at (613) 691-1006.
Online sessions are available anywhere in Ontario on a secure, encrypted video platform. You just click a link we email to you, with nothing to download. Online sessions can be easier to fit around work, school pickups or caregiving.
Cost and billing
Sessions with our therapists range from $130 to $200, depending on the clinician.
Depending on your plan, insurance may cover some or all of the cost. Coverage varies, so check your plan.
We accept Health Spending Accounts (HSAs).
We can direct bill many insurers, including for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). Desjardins is the exception: through TELUS eClaims, we can direct bill Desjardins for sessions with an RSW, RP or psychologist, but not for an RP (Qualifying).
