Many parents who search for parent coaching Ottawa options aren't looking for a program or a class. They want a professional to talk to about their own child, their own home and the moments that keep going sideways. At Transformation Counselling, that support is parent counselling: sessions with one of our therapists focused on how you parent. This post answers the questions parents ask us most often before booking, from who attends to how it differs from family or child therapy.
This post is general information, not a diagnosis or medical advice.
What parent coaching in Ottawa looks like with us
We don't run a separate coaching program. When Ottawa parents ask about parent coaching, what we offer is parent counselling: regular sessions where you, and a co-parent if you like, meet with one of our therapists to talk through what's happening at home.
The focus is you as a parent. Together you might look at:
what tends to set off the hardest moments with your child
how you respond when you're tired, worried or angry
how to set limits that feel firm and kind
how two parents can get on the same page
your own stress and the support you need
You leave each session with ideas to try, and you come back to talk about how they went.
How do I book parent counselling in Ottawa?
Whatever name you search under, parenting counselling Ottawa families book with us follows the same simple path. The first step is a free 15-minute phone call with our admin team. Tell them you're an Ottawa parent looking for parent-only sessions, share a little about your child's age and what's going on, and they'll suggest a good match.
Parent-only sessions most often happen online, with therapists whose profiles list parenting or parent coaching. That means you can meet from home, the office or a parked car during your lunch hour, anywhere in Ontario.
Do I bring my child?
Usually not. Most parent counselling Ottawa parents book with us is designed for adults only, so you can speak openly about frustration, guilt and worry without your child listening in.
If your therapist thinks it would help to meet your child, or you'd like your child to have their own support, we see children from age 6 in person and online. Teens can also have their own sessions. That's a separate conversation you can have at any point.
Parent-only, family or child therapy: which fits?
These three options overlap, but they're not the same:
Parent-only sessions. You meet with a therapist about your parenting. Best when you want to change how you respond at home, or when your child isn't ready or willing to come.
Family therapy. Several family members attend together, and the therapist works with how you all relate. Our post on family therapy in Ottawa explains this option in more detail.
Child or teen therapy. A therapist works one-on-one with your son or daughter and checks in with you along the way.
Some families combine options, for example parent sessions alongside a teen's individual therapy. Our admin team can help you decide where to start.
Is parenting support only for parents in crisis?
No. The parenting support Ottawa families reach out for ranges from big worries to everyday friction. Some come after a tough school report or a run of explosive mornings. Others come during a transition, like a separation, a new sibling or a move. Some simply feel worn out and want a thoughtful adult to think with.
You don't need a diagnosis for your child, or a label for the problem, to book. If you'd like a clearer picture of your child's needs, our Ottawa office also offers psychological assessments for children 6 and up, including ADHD assessments.
Does research support working with parents?
Yes. A 2023 meta-analysis looked at what happened after parents of kids with ADHD finished behavioural training. Improvements in how children behaved, in warm and consistent parenting, and in how parents and kids got along were still there months later. That review looked at ADHD, so it doesn't prove parent counselling helps every family. It does suggest that what parents practise at home can keep paying off.
The National Institute of Mental Health also encourages parents to talk with a professional when a child's behaviour or mood worries them, rather than waiting it out.
When school, emotions or anger are the worry
Common reasons Ottawa parents reach out include school stress, big emotions and conflict with older kids. A few of our posts may help while you decide on next steps:
In sessions, your therapist can help you turn general advice like this into a plan that fits your child and your household.
Questions parents ask before booking
I searched for parent therapy Ottawa. Is that the same as getting therapy for myself? Partly. The focus is your parenting, but your own stress, history and feelings often come up, and that's welcome.
Can both parents attend? Yes. Co-parents, step-parents and other caregivers can attend together or separately.
How many sessions will we need? It varies. Some parents come for a handful of sessions around one issue; others prefer ongoing support. You decide together with your therapist.
Will you tell me I'm doing it wrong? No. Sessions are collaborative and non-judgemental. Most parents who reach out are already working hard.
What will it cost? See the details below.
What happens in the first few sessions
Your first session is mostly listening. Your therapist will ask about your child, your family, what a typical week looks like and what you most want to change. If there's a co-parent, they'll want to hear both perspectives, including where you agree and where you don't.
Over the next sessions, you'll usually pick one or two situations to focus on, such as bedtime, homework battles or how arguments start. Your therapist may suggest a small change to try, then help you reflect on what happened. Progress is often gradual. A calmer evening here, a repaired argument there, adds up over time.
If something bigger comes up, like your own anxiety, grief or a strained relationship with your partner, your therapist can talk with you about whether individual or couples sessions might also help. You stay in charge of those choices.
Downtown or online
Our Ottawa office is at 1 Rideau St, 7th Floor, Ottawa, ON K1N 8S7, inside the Fairmont Château Laurier. You can call it at (613) 691-1006. Downtown is where we see children, teens, families and adults in person.
Parent-only sessions are often online, on a secure, encrypted video platform. We email you a link, and there's nothing to download. Many parents find online easier to fit around school runs and work.
Cost and billing
Sessions with our therapists range from $130 to $200, depending on the clinician.
Depending on your plan, insurance may cover up to 100% of the cost. Check your plan for what's included.
We accept Health Spending Accounts (HSAs).
We can direct bill many insurers, including for sessions with an RP (Qualifying). Desjardins is the exception: through TELUS eClaims, we can direct bill Desjardins for sessions with an RSW, RP or psychologist, but not for an RP (Qualifying).

If you're in crisis: if you or anyone else is in immediate danger, call 911. If you're having thoughts of suicide, call or text 9-8-8 any time.
Asking for help with parenting isn't a sign you're failing. It's often a sign you care a great deal.
