Family Therapy in Ottawa, Ontario, Working Through Conflict Together

When things are tense at home, everyone feels it. Maybe every conversation with your teen turns into an argument, two households are trying to raise the same kids, or adult siblings can't agree on how to care for a parent. Family therapy in Ottawa gives everyone a calm place to be heard and to work on what's happening between you, not just inside one person. This guide covers why families come in, who attends, what the first session is like and how to start, downtown or online.

This post is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan.

Family therapy in Ottawa, who it is for

Family therapy is for families of every shape: parents and kids, step-parents and stepchildren, grandparents raising grandchildren, adult siblings, chosen family and anyone else who shares a home or a history. You don't need to be in crisis to start. Many families reach out when the same conflict keeps repeating and nothing seems to change it.

Our Ottawa clinic offers individual, couples and family therapy, in person downtown and online. Children's therapy is available from age 6 and up.

What family therapy looks at

Family therapy looks at the patterns between people, rather than treating one person as "the problem." When a teen acts out or a parent seems constantly angry, there's usually more going on in the family as a whole: roles, stress, old hurts and ways of communicating that have stopped working.

A family therapist helps each person understand their part in those patterns, without blame. The goal is for everyone to manage their own thoughts, feelings and reactions a little better, and to communicate more clearly with each other. Our page on family therapy explains the systemic approach many family therapists draw on.

Nobody has to be the villain. Most families are doing their best with what they know, under a lot of pressure.

Common reasons Ottawa families come in

Every family is different, but some reasons come up again and again:

  • Parent and teen conflict. Constant arguments, slammed doors, screens, curfews and a sense that you can't talk anymore.

  • Blended families. New partners, step-siblings, different house rules and loyalty conflicts.

  • Separation and co-parenting. Helping kids adjust and helping parents communicate across two homes.

  • Caring for an aging parent. Adult siblings disagreeing about care, money or who does what.

  • After a loss. Grieving a death, an illness or a big change together, when everyone grieves differently.

  • Big transitions. A move, a new baby, a child leaving home or a parent returning to work.

If your reason isn't on this list, that's fine. Our admin team can tell you honestly whether family sessions make sense for what you're facing.

Parent and teen counselling in Ottawa

Conflict between parents and teens is one of the most common reasons families reach out. Teens are working out who they are and want more independence. Parents are trying to keep them safe and connected. Those goals can clash.

Parent and teen counselling in Ottawa gives both sides a place to be heard. A therapist can help slow down heated conversations, notice what each person actually needs and practise new ways of talking that don't end in a fight.

Often, sessions include some time together and some time with the teen or parent alone. That helps everyone speak more freely. Your therapist will explain at the start how privacy works and what will and won't be shared.

Who comes to sessions

One of the most common questions is "Does the whole family have to attend?" The short answer is no. Who comes depends on what you're working on, and it can change over time.

Some families start with everyone in the room. Others begin with just the parents, or with one parent and one teen. Sometimes family sessions are mixed with individual sessions for one or more family members. Your family therapist will talk with you about what makes sense and plan it together.

It's also okay if someone isn't ready. Change often starts with whoever is willing to come. As others see things shifting, they sometimes decide to join later.

What the first session looks like

Your first session is mostly about getting to know your family. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, how long things have felt this way and what each person hopes will change. Everyone gets a chance to speak, including kids and teens, in a way that fits their age.

You don't need to have the right words or agree on what the problem is. It's normal for family members to see things differently. Part of the therapist's job is to make sure each perspective is heard without the session turning into another argument.

By the end of the first session or two, you should have a sense of your goals, who will attend future sessions and whether the therapist is a good fit for your family.

Between sessions, your therapist may suggest small things to try at home, like a short weekly check-in, a new way to handle a recurring argument or a pause button anyone can use when things get heated. These experiments are small on purpose. Over time, small changes in how a family talks can add up to a home that feels calmer and safer for everyone.

When family members live elsewhere in Ontario

Families don't always live under one roof. An adult child might be in Toronto while a parent is in Ottawa, or co-parents might live in different cities.

Online sessions can help. Family members who are located anywhere in Ontario can join by secure video, and some families mix in-person and online participants. If you're looking for family counsellors near me but your family is spread across the province, ask our admin team how a mixed session would work for you.

In person downtown or online

In person. Our Ottawa office is at 1 Rideau Street, 7th Floor, Ottawa, ON K1N 8S7, inside the Fairmont Château Laurier. You can reach our Ottawa team at (613) 691-1006.

Online. Online sessions use a secure, encrypted video platform and are available anywhere in Ontario. They can make it easier to fit sessions around school, work and activities, or to include a family member who can't come downtown.

When you book, tell our admin team you're looking for a family therapist in Ottawa, who might attend and whether you'd prefer in person, online or a mix. They'll help match you with a family counsellor in Ottawa who's a good fit.

Cost and billing

Here's what to know about cost:

  • Family sessions with our therapists range from $170 to $200, depending on the clinician. Individual sessions range from $130 to $200.

  • Depending on your plan, insurance may cover some or all of the cost. Coverage varies, so it's worth checking your plan, including whose plan a family session can be claimed under.

  • We accept Health Spending Accounts (HSAs).

  • We can direct bill many insurers, including for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). Desjardins is the exception: through TELUS eClaims, we can direct bill Desjardins for sessions with an RSW, RP or psychologist, but not for an RP (Qualifying).
