Maybe it's the way you speak to your kids after a long day. Maybe it's road rage on the Queensway, a resentment at work that never quite goes away or words you wish you could take back. If you're looking into anger management in Ottawa, you've already done something important: you've noticed a pattern and want it to change. This post explains how individual counselling for anger works with us, what sessions focus on and how to get started downtown or online.
This post is general information, not a diagnosis or a treatment plan.
Who anger management therapy is for
You don't need to wait for a crisis to get help with anger. People reach out when:
small frustrations turn into shouting or slammed doors
they feel irritated or on edge most of the day
anger is hurting a relationship, a friendship or their job
they hold it in, then explode later
they feel guilt or shame after losing their temper
someone they love has asked them to get help
Anger itself is a normal, healthy emotion. It tells us when something feels wrong or unfair. Counselling isn't about getting rid of anger. It's about understanding it and choosing what you do with it.
Counselling, not a class
Search for anger management Ottawa options and you'll mostly find classes and courses. That's not what we offer. Our anger management counselling, Ottawa and online, is one-on-one therapy built around you, your history and your goals. We don't run classes, courses or groups.
Individual sessions give you room to talk honestly about what's been happening, without an audience. Your therapist can tailor the pace and focus to what you actually need, rather than following a set curriculum.
What anger is often covering
Anger tends to arrive fast and loud, which makes it easy to miss what's underneath. Very often, anger is protecting a more vulnerable feeling, such as:
Hurt. Feeling dismissed, criticised or let down.
Stress. Too much on your plate for too long, with no room to recover.
Shame. Feeling not good enough, then lashing out before anyone else can notice.
Fear. Worry about money, health, the future or losing someone.
Grief. Loss that hasn't had space to be felt.
When you start to recognise the feeling under the anger, you get more choice about how to respond.
What happens in sessions
Every person is different, so sessions will look different too. Common parts of anger management therapy, Ottawa or online, include:
Mapping your triggers. The situations, people and times of day that tend to set you off.
Noticing early body signs. Tight shoulders, heat in your face or a racing heart, so you can act before the anger peaks.
Pause skills. Practical ways to step back, calm your body and buy time before you respond.
Thinking patterns. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) can help you spot thoughts that pour fuel on the fire, like "they're doing this on purpose".
The feelings underneath. Emotion-focused work can help you understand and express hurt, fear or shame more directly.
Repair. How to apologise, rebuild trust and talk things through after an outburst.
When anger travels with something else
Anger rarely shows up alone. It can be linked with depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, burnout, grief or drinking. For example, depression can show up as irritability rather than sadness, and trauma can leave the body braced for danger.
An anger management therapist, Ottawa based or online, can help you look at the bigger picture. If another concern is part of the story, your therapist can work on that too, so you're not just managing symptoms on the surface.
Anger and your relationship
Anger often does its biggest damage at home. Couples sessions can help partners understand each other's patterns, slow down heated arguments and repair after conflict. You can learn more about how couples sessions work on our couples counselling page.
There is one important exception. If there is violence, threats, control or fear in the relationship, safety comes first. Guidance from McMaster University's VEGA project on responding safely to intimate partner violence notes that couples interventions are not recommended when there is partner violence, because of concerns about harm. In that case, individual sessions may be the safer place to start. If anyone is in danger, call 911.
For men who aren't sure therapy is for them
Many men we talk to have never seen a therapist before. Some worry it will be all talk and no tools. Others feel that needing help with anger means something is wrong with them.
Anger counselling can be very practical. You'll leave sessions with skills you can use the same day. If you'd feel more comfortable with a man, our Ottawa office has male therapists. If you'd prefer to meet online, ask about online options when you book.
Teens with anger
If you're a parent worried about your teen's anger, we also offer individual counselling for teens and family sessions. A free consultation is a good place to talk through what's been happening at home and which option makes sense.
What progress can look like
Change with anger is usually gradual, and it rarely looks like never getting angry again. More often, people notice things like:
catching the early signs sooner, before they say something hurtful
taking a pause more often, even in heated moments
fewer blow-ups, or blow-ups that are shorter and less intense
repairing more quickly when things do go wrong
feeling less tense and on guard during the day
family members or a partner saying home feels calmer
How long counselling takes depends on you, what's going on underneath and how often you meet. Your therapist will check in with you along the way about what's working and what to focus on next.
Before your first session
You don't need to have it all figured out before you start. It can help to think about a few recent times you lost your temper: what happened just before, what you felt in your body and what happened afterwards. If someone close to you has raised concerns, it's worth noting what they've said too.
Be as honest as you can. Your therapist isn't there to judge you or tell you you're a bad person. They're there to help you understand the pattern and change it.
Who you'll work with
Some people search for an anger management psychologist, Ottawa wide, when they want help. At our clinic, therapy for anger is provided by Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) and Registered Social Workers (RSWs). Our psychologists focus on assessment and diagnosis. Our admin team can help you find a therapist who fits what you're looking for.
In person downtown or online
Our Ottawa office is at 1 Rideau Street, 7th Floor, inside the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, and you can reach us at (613) 691-1006. Sessions are confidential and judgment-free.
If getting downtown isn't practical, you can meet with a therapist online anywhere in Ontario on a secure, encrypted video platform. Online sessions can be easier to fit around work, commuting and family life, and you can join from a private room at home or anywhere else you feel comfortable talking.
Cost, billing and your first step
Sessions with our therapists range from $130 to $200, depending on the clinician.
Depending on your plan, insurance may cover some or all of the cost. Coverage varies, so check your plan.
We can direct bill many insurers, including for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). Desjardins is the exception: through TELUS eClaims, we can direct bill Desjardins for sessions with an RSW, RP or psychologist, but not for an RP (Qualifying).
Getting anger management help, Ottawa or online, starts with a short conversation. Book a free 15-minute consultation with our admin team.
If you're in crisis: if anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. If you're thinking about suicide or self-harm, call or text 9-8-8 any time. More options are on our crisis lines page.
