About Heather Kerr

Heather believes that we all have the desire to be our best selves but sometimes life gets complicated by a life transition or an adverse experience.  We know ourselves best, but sometimes we may need the skills and experience of a therapist to walk with us, to navigate and support our journey. Self-reflection and the learning of new skills is a progressive process, we are always growing and changing.  Finding the right fit with a therapist is very important.  Heather brings life experience and an abundance of empathy, offering a non-judgmental space to explore challenges and new pathways for clients to be their best selves.

Heather is a Registered Clinical Social Worker with over 30 years’ experience in the mental health field, specializing in trauma, addictions (substance use - not gambling or sex addiction), grief and life transitions.  During her career, she has worked in a variety of settings including community counselling, medical social work, addiction treatment, post secondary education and the criminal justice system.

Areas of focus include navigating life transitions such as relationship challenges, new parenting, separation and divorce, grief and loss, and unemployment. Heather also supports clients through childhood trauma, abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use.

She holds a Master of Social Work Degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology/Law & Criminology from Carleton University. Heather is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Recognizing that we are all very different people, Heather has an eclectic approach to counselling, using what fits and what works for each unique client. Heather practices from a strength-based approach, incorporating Mindfulness, Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Stage of Change, and principles of Internal Family System (IFS) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

Heather lives in Cambridge Ontario with her husband Ken and her cat, Sagwa.  She has two sons and three stepsons. Heather enjoys kayaking, hiking, biking, gardening, reading and day trips on the motorcycle.
