Low-cost and sliding-scale counselling
Counselling Collaborative of Waterloo Region (CCWR)
The CCWR is a partnership of six non-profit community mental health agencies across the region:
Camino Wellbeing + Mental Health (Kitchener)
Interfaith Counselling Centre (New Hamburg)
Muslim Social Services Waterloo Region (Kitchener)
Porchlight Counselling & Addiction Services (Cambridge)
Shalom Counselling Services (Waterloo)

According to the CCWR, fees are based on your income and ability to pay. Some people may qualify for fully funded services, and no one is turned away because they can't pay. The agencies offer individual, couple and family counselling. Adults, children and youth are all welcome. Appointments are offered through the week, including some evenings and Saturdays.
The CCWR also offers services in multiple languages and can arrange interpreters when needed. Its agencies can help with a wide range of concerns, such as anxiety and depression, grief, parenting, relationships, trauma and addictions.
How to get started: Contact the agency you prefer directly. If you're not sure where to go, call the CCWR intake line at 519-884-0000.

ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600): Free, confidential information about mental health and addiction services anywhere in Ontario, 24 hours a day.

Other ways to lower the cost
Check for an employee assistance program (EAP)
Many employers offer an employee assistance program (EAP). An EAP often includes short-term counselling at no cost to you. Ask your HR department, or check your benefits booklet.
Look at all your benefits
If you have health benefits through work, school, a partner or a parent, check whether they cover a psychotherapist, social worker or psychologist. If you're covered by two plans, you may be able to claim from both.
Low-cost options at Transformation Counselling
We believe cost shouldn't stop anyone from getting help. Here are the options we offer:
Student therapist program: Through our free and low-cost counselling program, you can see a supervised student therapist completing a Master's degree in counselling, social work or psychotherapy. Sessions range from $0 to $80. Not everyone qualifies, so we'll talk through whether it's a good fit.
Sliding scale: Each of our therapists sees a limited number of clients at a reduced, sliding-scale fee. Ask us whether a spot is available.
Benefits and direct billing: We can direct bill many insurance plans, as long as your therapist meets your plan's requirements.
We see clients in person in Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge, as well as Ottawa, and online across Ontario. No referral is needed, and evening and weekend appointments are available.
Tips for finding free and low-cost counselling in Waterloo Region
Apply to more than one option. It's okay to sign up for OSP and try a walk-in session while you wait.
Be honest about your budget. Sliding-scale agencies and clinics need to know what you can afford.
Ask about waitlists. Knowing the wait helps you plan other supports in the meantime.
Use walk-in help in between. Single-session counselling can give you tools to cope while you wait.
